Optimum nutrition is the most popular name in the workout supplement industry. You hardly see them advertising or promoting their supplements. They have developed a variety of supplements including creatine, casein, branched chain amino acid and protein bars.
Their Gold Standard Whey has been one of the most selling supplements in the industry, but I was very curious to try their Gold Standard Pre Workout– Is it the best Pre Workout supplement available in the market?
Let’s find out.

ON Gold Standard Pre Workout Ingredients
The serving size of a scoop is 10 grams. One scoop contains 10 calories and 2 grams of carbohydrates.
Gold Standard Pre Workout has divided the ingredients into 3 sections. The “Muscle Matrix” has 3 grams of creatine and 25 milligrams of AstraGIN proprietary Blend. I’m going to explain the functions and benefits of every ingredient below in my next heading.
Caffeine is in the “Energy and Focus Complex” section. This section has 175 milligrams of caffeine, 375 milligrams of Acetyl-L-Carnitine HCI, 250 milligrams of N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine and 100 milligrams of citrus Bioflavonoids Complex.
Yeah! I know the amount of caffeine is quite less if you compare it with other Pre Workout supplements available in the market, but it works best for those who have zero tolerance to caffeine. One study showed that you can be caffeine tolerant withing 1-4 days.
There’s also 1.5 milligrams of Beta-Alanine (as CarnoSyn) and 750 milligrams of Micronized L-Citrulline in “Performance Composite”.
There is a significant amount of Vitamins present in it, starting from Vitamin D to Pantothenic which are basically for stronger bones and providing you enough energy during workouts.
Then, there are “Other Ingredients” which are mostly available to enhance the taste of the supplement. They are artificial sweeteners and flavors, one such sweetener is Sucralose. Sucralose is present in almost all workout supplements to add sweetness to supplements without adding calories or carbohydrates.

ON Gold Standard Pre Workout Benefits
Gold Standard Pre Workout doesn’t have too many complicated ingredients, but it does have the basic ingredients to provide you ample energy and strength during your workouts.
The “Muscle Matrix” blend has 3 grams of creatine to increase muscle power and performance in high intensity workouts. One thing I love about Optimum Nutrition is that they always try to use the best ingredients in their supplements. Creapure is the purest form of creatine available in the market.
Creatine is combined with AstraGIN Proprietary Blend which is an absorption assistant that increases the absorption of many vital nutrients promoting a healthy gut.
AstraGIN is composed of highly purified saponins isolated from the Astragalus membranaceus extract and Panax notoginseng extract that has been shown to improve the efficiency of how well nutrients are absorbed into the body.
The “Performance Composite” has Beta-alanine and L-citrulline which are non-essential amino acids. Beta-alanine improves endurance and it is also known for producing unusual sensation typically described as “tingling” on the skin. L-citrulline helps in improving the blood flow throughout your body.
Then, we have “Energy & Focus Complex”. It has 175 milligrams of caffeine which is very easy to tolerate and suits best for someone who has zero-tolerance of caffeine. Caffeine helps you to stay focused and is believed to influence the way muscles utilize glycogen allowing them to function longer before fatigue sets in.
The other ingredients in the “Energy & Focus Blend” are Acetyl-L-Carnitine HCI which helps the body produce energy and N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine which improves alertness and concentration. Citrus bioflavonoids complex is an antioxidant to support blood circulation.
One of the major drawbacks which I feel is that it doesn’t have Branched Chain Amino Acid which is an essential amino acid and helps in boosting muscle growth and enhancing exercise performance.
You might feel disappointed if you are taking Pre Workout for a very long time as caffeine and other stimulants aren’t in high quantity, but overall the Gold Standard Pre Workout has a good quality of ingredients.
The vitamins available in it helps in making the blood cells and maintaining your overall health. It also reduces the symptoms of depression and is also an addition for those people who are suffering from vitamin deficiencies.
ON Gold Standard Pre Workout Side Effects
The common side effects of Pre Workouts are headache, insomnia, and tingly sensations. But, you will hardly notice it in the Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Pre Workout. It has very little amount of caffeine as compared to most of its competitors which have around a minimum of 200 milligrams of caffeine.
You might feel a little tingling sensation which is mainly due to Beta-alanine ingredient but it is harmless. But you get used to this unusual feeling after a while anyway.
You can take it even in the evening because it will not cause any problem in your sleep pattern. This is mainly due to its low caffeine dosage.
There are hardly any serious side effects of ON Gold Standard Pre Workout because of its low dosages of stimulants. If you want something with a little amount of caffeine or if you have zero caffeine tolerance but still want to try Pre Workout then this might be your one of the options available in the market.
ON Gold Standard Pre Workout flavor
ON Gold Standard Pre Workout comes in the following 6 flavors:
- Blueberry Lemonade
- Green Apple
- Fruit Punch
But, if you ask me what’s Gold Standard Pre Workout Best Flavor then, I would say Blueberry Lemonade flavor and what I didn’t like is the Green Apple flavor. Believe me, it’s the worst.
ON Gold Standard Pre Workout Price
It comes in 2 sizes:
- 30 serving is around $15
- 60 servings it is around $34.
The Price of 30 servings is around $15.59 and for 60 servings the price is around $30. One scoop will cost you around 50-60 cents which is not a bad deal at all.
I will recommend you to buy a smaller size first and if you like it, then think of buying a larger size.
How To Take it
Mix one scoop of ON gold standard pre workout with 8 oz of cold water and drink it 15-20 minutes before going to the gym.
Though it contains only 175 milligrams of caffeine, still I would suggest you to start it with half a scoop because if you are sensitive to stimulants you might feel anxious after taking it.
Get your body used to these supplements and once your body gets used to it then start taking a full scoop. I recommend you to start taking a full scoop after 4-5 days.
Pro Tip: If you want some energy boost, you can buy creatine to add to this. You will love it.
Optimum Nutrition is a big name and it is very difficult to maintain your name in the Fitness industry where the competition is too high, but they have been maintaining it successfully. You might think that the quantity of the ingredients is very small, but I must say that the quality of the ingredients is pretty good.
This Pre Workout provides you long-lasting energy and endurance to go through your workout.
- Caffeine is easy to tolerate
- High amount of creatine for long-lasting energy
- Provide an additional boost to your recovery
- No BCAAs included
- The taste may be too sweet for some because of artificial sweeteners
- You might feel itching afterward
